Start With Your Goals
The day begins with your experience, interests, comfort level, mobility, and the skills you most want to improve.
Dave Harvey is the owner and lead guide at Current Fly Fishing. Based in Reno, Nevada, he guides the Truckee River near Reno, Truckee, and Lake Tahoe with a focus on safe, enjoyable, and educational days on the water.
Dave has been guiding since 2010. His patient, step-by-step approach helps first-time anglers build confidence while giving experienced fly fishers the local knowledge and technical adjustments needed to make the most of changing river conditions.
Dave grew up in Mammoth Lakes, California, where summers were spent chasing trout and winters were spent skiing. That background shaped a lifelong connection to the mountains and rivers that flow through the Sierra Nevada and a passion for sharing outdoor experiences that bring people back year after year.
He began his professional fishing career at The Troutfitter in Mammoth Lakes in 2010 and soon moved into guiding. Over the years, he has guided anglers with a wide range of experience levels and built lasting relationships with repeat clients.
Dave now lives in Reno with his wife and four children. The Truckee River is Current Fly Fishing’s primary home water, and his work centers on helping anglers fish and enjoy the river in both Nevada and California.
Fly fishing involves many moving parts: casting, line control, rigging, reading water, presentation, hook-setting, and fish fighting. Dave breaks those skills into manageable steps and adjusts the day to the individual rather than forcing every guest into the same routine.

Clear demonstrations and progression-based instruction help anglers understand one skill before adding the next.
Tactics, location, pace, and instruction change with river conditions and how each angler is progressing.
Beginners do not need their own equipment or prior fly fishing experience. Dave explains the process without assuming background knowledge and gives each angler time to practice before moving on.
Experienced anglers often benefit most from a guide who can shorten the learning curve on unfamiliar water. Dave helps guests understand how the Truckee changes by section, season, flow, temperature, and time of day.
Current Fly Fishing maintains working relationships with trusted guides and outfitters in the Reno–Tahoe region and beyond. This allows us to support larger groups, multi-guide trips, and dates when Dave is already committed.
Every guide working through Current Fly Fishing is selected for teaching ability, angling skill, professionalism, and the ability to provide the type of day our clients expect.
