Truckee River | East Walker River
California & Nevada

With Reno, Nevada as our home base, we are able to access many great fly fishing locations within an hour drive, along with other productive waters throughout the Eastern Sierra.

The Truckee River is our home water, and we also guide trips on the East Walker River. These are two of the Eastern Sierra’s best rivers for large, hard-fighting brown and rainbow trout.

Float trips on the Truckee River offer a completely different perspective on this beautiful fishery and allow access to water that is difficult to reach on foot.

The Best Time to Fish the Truckee River

A day on the water always beats a day in the office, but going when conditions are right makes it even better.

Our favorite times of year to fish are spring and fall, especially May through June and September through October. July and August can still be great months to fish, but we usually start early in the morning to beat the heat of the day.

The Truckee River sits on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada and can experience a wide range of weather and water conditions. Use the links below to check river flows, weather and access before your trip.

Have Questions About Fly Fishing?

Here are a few common questions about our guided fly fishing trips, locations, rates, timing, dogs, licensing and cancellation policy.

See All Information
What services do you offer?

We are a catch-and-release fly fishing guide service. We teach all levels of anglers, so if it is your first time, we make sure to take the time to teach you the skills and techniques you will need for a day on the water.

What locations do your trips take place in?

We are based in Reno, Nevada and offer guide trips on the Truckee River. We have the ability to guide in California and Nevada, allowing us to access much of the Truckee River.

What are the rates of your services?

We offer a range of trip options, and rates differ based on how many people are in the group and the trip type. To see all services offered, visit our Guide Trips and Rates page.

What is the best time of year to fly fish?

Anytime you can make it out is a good time to go fishing, as many of the places we fish are open year-round. However, depending on water conditions, we especially enjoy fishing in early spring and fall.

Can we bring our dog?

The short answer is that it depends. We understand every dog is different, and we like to chat about it before booking. If it seems like a good fit, we are happy to have your furry friend along. However, dogs are not allowed on Truckee River float trips because the rafts are relatively small and inflatable.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We are licensed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. We are also insured and bonded.

What is your cancellation policy?

Deposits become non-refundable 14 days prior to the trip date. Our guide trips go out rain or shine, and cancellations based on environmental factors are solely at Current Fly Fishing’s discretion.
