Get the Mend Before the Bend
Mending is one of the most important skills in indicator fly fishing. A properly timed mend helps reduce drag, improve drift quality and keep flies moving naturally through productive water.
This video focuses on the importance of getting the mend in place before the current creates too much bend in the fly line. Early mends can dramatically improve presentation and help keep flies in the strike zone longer.
Whether you are new to indicator fishing or refining your nymphing technique on the Truckee River, understanding line control and mending can make a major difference in your success on the water.

- Common indicator nymphing mistakes to avoid
Why Mending Matters
When indicator fishing, your flies need time to sink and drift naturally. If your fly line or leader starts dragging across faster or slower currents, the indicator can pull the flies out of the zone. A well-timed mend helps create a better presentation and gives your flies a longer, more natural drift.
Indicator Fly Fishing Tips
The key is to mend early, before the current creates a large bend in your line. Once the line is already dragging, it becomes much harder to fix the presentation without moving the indicator or pulling the flies unnaturally. Learning to anticipate the mend is one of the biggest steps toward becoming a more effective nymph angler.
